Kot Diji Fort Fort Ahmedabad Khairpur

Khairpur, Sindh

Overview

Perched commandingly atop a 110-foot limestone hill along the edge of the Thar Desert in Khairpur District Sindh Kot Diji Fort officially named Fort Ahmedabad is one of Pakistans most spectacular and intact 18th-century military fortresses. Built between 1785 and 1795 by Mir Sohrab Khan Talpur founder of the Upper Sindh Talpur dynasty the fortress was engineered specifically to withstand heavy artillery invasions and defend royal territories. Featuring a 1.8-kilometer defensive perimeter wall built with kiln-burnt bricks 30-foot high ramparts massive 50-foot watchtowers and spiked elephant-proof iron wooden gates Kot Diji represents the pinnacle of late-eighteenth-century military strategy. Remarkably the fortress sits directly above an ancient archaeological mound of the pre-Harappan Kot Diji civilization dating back to 3300 BCE making it an essential destination combining military architectural grandeur with prehistoric Indus history.
