Empress Market Saddar Heritage Core Karachi

Karachi, Sindh

Overview

Standing at the bustling nexus of Saddar Town in central Karachi, Empress Market is one of Pakistan's most historically significant and visually dramatic colonial-era landmarks. Constructed between 1884 and 1889 by the Karachi Municipal Corporation and designed by municipal architect James Strachan, the market was built to commemorate Queen Victoria, the Empress of India. Built using warm reddish Jodhpur sandstone transported from Rajasthan, the building combines British Gothic structural engineering—such as vaulted roofs and pointed arches—with traditional Mughal-style open courtyards and four symmetrical wings. Crowned by a magnificent 140-foot central clock tower, Empress Market has recently undergone extensive urban restoration, stripping away past encroachments to reveal its original 19th-century grandeur as Karachi's ultimate commercial heartbeat.
